the Open Ended Questions challenge

In psychotherapy, like in life, we get into habits, and rarely get pushed to go beyond them. This trainer is here to challenge you, and take you outside your usual Open-Ended-Questions to questions you may have other wise not asked. And when you ask, you never know what you might learn…

the rules:

The rules of the game are as follows: you receive a client statement, and ask an open ended question in response. after brief feedback, ask another, different open ended question. And then another. the goal is to exhaust you ‘regular’ questions so that you need to start thinking creatively about new and different questions you could ask.

Types of O-E-Q:

There are different types of open ended questions. For example, questions could aim to gather information, or deepen emotions, or take a new perspective on things. Try to mix up your attempts with different types of questions.

Quality of O-E-Q:

Open ended questions should normally adhere to the following criteria:

  1. only one question or one focus at a time

  2. clear (not vague) questions that the patient is capable of answering

  3. Use a non-judgmental style, to avoid the questions feeling like an interrogation.
