Good therapy has clear goals. Some clients make it challenging to set clear therapy goals. try setting a clear therapy goal while remaing empathic to the clients issues that will not be addressed with the therapy goal that has been chosen.

major skills to use:

  1. Summaries: help the client organize the information being discussed, to more easily focus and choose.

  2. Validation: let the client know that it’s ok to have many issues that won’t be addressed, and are still valid and meaningful.

  3. Goal setting: explicitly discuss the value of clear goals, and their importance in creating change.

  4. Exploration: help the client explore their potential goals in depth, instead of jumping between different topics.
